Thanks for this John. I am aware of the problems with the alkalines
vs silver oxide. My understanding is that the MR9 adapter is a bit
thicker than the original battery. If so, does it prevent the battery
housing cap from sealing flush to the base plate? As a result of
joining the group,I went to your site to look at it yesterday. In an
earlier comment you suggested that there was a difference in
'accuracy' of the MR9 and your installing a diode in an overhaul.
FYI, I have an OM1 from about 1974 (ser #883953) that runs very
smoothly albeit the foam is poor. This was my first OM. It has been
professionally serviced a couple of times in the past. I had 3 others
and a large set of lenses that were that were lost in a break-in a
quite number of years ago and I also have a later model MD(ser
1349876). It is the one with the newer battery. I also have an OM40
that is quite nice too. It is my first and only automatic. It does
not get used as often as I prefer my own decisions.

I will consider your suggestion to service as I am sure you are
correct in assuming they would benefit from it.

I also tend to agree that either the USPS or the Canadian Postal
services are easier to use than other delivery services and I have
never lost anything, although items are sometimes delayed at the
border. A privilege that we are service charged $4.00 for plus
whatever taxes are identifed (usually about 6%). I believe that no
taxes are charged on services under these conditions; just for goods.

When I decide what to do I will contact you directly off list.

I would also like to make the general comment that I have enjoyed the
discussions I have read in the past week and look forward to
participating constructively in the future.

Alkaline 1.55V battery by itself introduces more error than can be
dialed out with the meter eccentric. Also, results are non-linear and
battery loses voltage as soon as you start to use it. A calibrated meter
quickly goes out of adjustment. It's for these reasons that I never
recommend the alkaline battery (625A, 625U).

With the silver oxide battery (357, 303, MS76, KS76, SR44W, G13) ditto
on too much error to dial out if used without the diode (1N6263) and
(also without diode) meter is non linear. Ex.: If adjusted to be good
at BV12 (asa 100, 1/125th @ f5.6), it'll be close at BV9 but probably
off (needle high, underexposing) a full stop at BV15.

If meter is accurate and you're not getting an overhaul, the next best
thing is using an MR9 adapter with the 386 silver oxide battery. I sell
them if you are interested.
