I had a Mercedes ML270 a few years ago, also a common rail diesel, and
I did something similar to that (yes, more than once a prat!). I had
put about half a tank of petrol in when I realised my mistake. I
wandered sheepishly into the building to pay the man for the petrol
and told him what I had done. He advised me to top it up with diesel
and it would be OK.
So I did, and it was OK. I drove that M-Class for another year or so
with no ill effects. I think that I worried more about the BMW
because it's more highly tuned -- 150bhp from 2 litres vs 165 from
2.7ltires.
