I got my car back at midday. The chap who owns the local garage came
in and worked all morning to sort out my cock-up.

He drained the tanks. I had not realised that there was more than one
in my little car, but they are saddle tanks and he had to remove the
back seat bench and open the tops of each tank before using a little
pump to drain each one.

Meanwhile he got me to go and fill a jerrycan with 20l of diesel to
start the tank refill. I then drove it off to a BP station and topped
up the tank; I used Ultimate diesel in the hope that the better
quality would do a better job of removing the contamination. It's not
a complete waste of money as I do get slightly better fuel consumption
from the better diesels (Total Excellium is the other one I've tried).

And the charge for the chap's morning's work? A miserly 100 Best
British notes! And that included having to dispose of my fuel in his
new very expensive bunded waste tank.

I have been very lucky and I won't bother the List with my woes for a
moment longer ... ;-)
