I must confess that my recollection, while very vivid (also watching on a B&W
television) is slightly different. I was 8 years old, and living in Communist
Poland. Like 99% of the country's population, we were thrilled to see the Stars
and Stripes on the moon, not because of "giant step for mankind" and all that,
but because the Americans had beaten the hated Soviets to the moon. And frankly
speaking, that was the main significance of the event. It signalled that the
USA now had an irreversible technological lead over the Soviet Union. It took
another 20 years, but the evil empire (and yes, I choose Ronald Reagan's phrase
deliberately) was finally defeated, peacefully.

Cheers,
Nathan
