It looks similar to what's commonly called the "Bunker Hill Bridge" in
Boston

and the Sunshine Skyway bridge across the entrance to Tampa Bay
<http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/images/sunshineskyway1_bridge_1.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/wonder/structure/sunshineskyway1_bridge.html&h=183&w=275&sz=1&tbnid=0ChRJBbdPfirKM:&tbnh=160&tbnw=240&zoom=1&usg=__oP9480V3siSVIumiwyg8qdMaEKc=&docid=W3TbOy_C5EFKzM&itg=1&sa=X&ei=2peFUZGGMYOW0QGMoIGoCg&ved=0CKsBEPwdMAs>

There must be some engineering and/or economic advantages to this basic
design. But I don't know what they are.
