John H mentioned something several days ago about the fact that the various lens iteration's rings were not interchangeable as they were slightly different in size. I wonder if this applies to other parts as well? This would certainly prevent the cross matching of lens elements which would likely degrade image quality significantly.

It would be nice if there were accessible records of S/N's and when
coatings changed, but I've never heard of any.  I think the lens survey and
the scouring of OM literature looking for "first mention" of MC was done to
help plug that gap.  The question may have been posed to John H. before
about how those replacing lens elements during lens repair sort this all
out.  Is there anything?
