Is there any good way to focus with a rangefinder (XA) in low light? I have
enough trouble seeing the double image at the best of times, but when things
get dim I have no chance. Should I just estimate range by hand and set it
manually, or is there some trick I'm missing?
(I'd guess low light is where passive AF starts to become very unhappy,
right?)

Many older RF's need the RF optics cleaned and focusing ability in lower
light levels improves dramatically when they are. Examine yours closely to
see if it's hazed or fogged, or looks dusty.
If it's difficult to focus on the subject I look for another object at
about the same distance that has sharp lines or contrast edges to work
with, focus on it, then swing back and compose the desired image. It's a
usable method for the split image RF and microprism ring on the focusing
screen in SLR's too.
