I just finished installing a new NetGear wireless router in place of the
aging Motorola that was causing me (and very many of you helpful souls)
incredible grief. After all that... $39 fixed the problem.
That it was successful was known pretty much immediately. Pings by name
to both computers worked as expected. Both can see the computers in the
workgroup. And I was just viewing photos my wife took in London and
stored on the laptop... from my desktop machine across the hall.
Most amazing of all, I had previously removed the driver for the new
laser printer from the laptop figuring I'd have to reinstall it. Nope.
The laptop saw the new printer on the net and printed a double sided
document for me straight away with no driver installation. I've always
done it but perhaps I've never really needed to install printer drivers
on the computers other than where the printer is installed.
Special thanks to all of you who thought long and hard about this and
kept feeding me with thoughts and things to try. This list is just
something else. And my apologies to all you other suffering souls from
all the heavy OT traffic here.
Finally, I must say a thankyou to Jim who pestered me off-list both last
night and this morning about trying a shorter cable on the laptop. That
wasn't the solution to the problem but it was while trying the short,
long and then short again cables that I noticed that the short cable was
successful on the first go. But then I tried it again later and it
failed. That's what convinced me that it was worth it to go buy a new
router even if it proved not to be the real problem.
I'm happy, happy, happy. It's been a long 3 days of frustration. Many
