Jerry -

As far as I know (not very far at all) your modification shouldn't 
damage the meter but it might lead to a slight under-exposure across 
the board as the 1.4V zinc-air cell is slightly more powerful than 
the 1.35 mercury battery. This is assuming that the "adaptor 
collar" just resizes the batery and doesn't drop the voltage or 
anything. Here in the UK most camera shops are now selling a zinc-air 
battery which claims to be 1.35V, but it is expensive and all 
zince-air cells only have a life of about 2 months max. once they are 
activated.
