If the W7 machine is still operational, a vbs tool "productkey.vbs" can
get the key. It grabs the binary product key from the registry, and
converts it into the 'normal' human-readable key. 

Here is one of them. It looks sensible, seems to not have any nasty
hidden things going on, and seems to work for me):

Click the 'Raw' button to get the script as plain text, you'll need to
copy/paste the code into a text file, and rename it to a .vbs file The
key should be 5 sets (separated by a minus sign) of 5 letters/numbers
from the following set: "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789"

If it's an upgrade key, you may need to have an XP disk to hand to
'qualify' the install (I've never done an XP->7 upgrade). Depending on
the age of the source disk, you'll no doubt have a ton of updates to do.
