I just want to report back that I managed to borrow a nikon sb26 flash 
and that works okay with the slave unit. Yes I did make sure the flash 
wasn't set in slave mode and tried with and without sensor ;-)

just need to wait for my thingybayed sunpak 333D flash to arrive and 
then I need to decide on what other adjustable flash I should get to 
work as master.
